Spring Has Sprung! Time to Clean your Jewelry
Spring is upon us and it feel SO GOOD. This time of year evokes growth, hope, and an invitation to the light. Aaaand, maybe, if you are like me, and invitation to LIGHTEN up and clean things out! Spring is the perfect time to allow ourselves the opportunity to release the old to welcome the new and make space—physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually—for that which we are ready to receive and cultivate in our lives.
Every year, I go through my jewelry collection to decide what really brings me joy and perhaps what I no longer wear. Last year was not a great gauge for that, as going out was essentially ZERO! However, I love to go through my pieces and decide what still resonates with me and what does not. And for those pieces I love and keep—a little spring cleaning!
Here are some easy, non-toxic ways to give your jewelry a little love, get some grime off, and have it shining and looking like new again for your upcoming spring and summer season! All you need is a little dish-soap, water, cotton rag, toothpaste and an old toothbrush! (no—we’re not brushing our teeth!)
For this post, I chose a pair of my all-time favorites—my metal and macrame goddess hoop earrings. These are one of my favorite pairs in my favorite color—green. Over time, however, the copper can get a little patina’ed and dark, and the macrame can sometimes accrue a little dust and dirt due to the waxiness of the cords. Here’s what I do to get them shining and looking like new again!
Step 1: Use a cotton ball or rag with a tiny bit of toothpaste and shine the copper or brass elements of your jewelry gently. As you can see from just a tiny bit, I got quite a bit of grime off my copper hoop!
Step 2: Once you’ve sufficiently cleaned and brightened your metal jewelry components, (this may take a bit longer and some more toothpaste, depending on the size), its time to move on to the macrame!
Step 3: Have a small bowl or dish with fresh water. Put just a tiny amount ( a little goes a very long way) of dish soap onto your toothbrush and gently scrub the macrame and any leftover toothpaste from before. Gently rinse with fresh water to get all soap and toothpaste from your piece.
Step 4: Lay your jewelry out to dry on a clean towel to dry; better yet, if its sunny outside, let your jewelry soak up the sunshine!
Step 5 (optional): If you have a jewelry polish cloth, giving a final once over to your pieces will add an extra layer of proctection and shine! If you don’t have one, I HIGHLY recommend!!! They are cheap and so easy to use. Here’s one of my favorites:
